NHS trusts introduce AI tools to improve care

NHS trusts in Wolverhampton and Walsall are rolling out AI‑powered ambient voice technology to reduce the administrative burden on healthcare professionals. The initiative follows a successful pilot that cut documentation time for clinicians, aiming to improve patient care and staff productivity across both organizations.

Heidi Health to expand digital tools across two trusts

The technology, provided by Heidi Health, listens to patient consultations and automatically generates structured clinical notes. Clinicians review, amend, and approve these notes before they are uploaded to patient records, ensuring accuracy while saving time.

Both The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust have selected Heidi Health as their preferred supplier for this deployment. The rollout represents a significant step in their digital transformation strategies, focusing on how technology can support frontline teams.

Heidi Health’s platform operates within strict security protocols, capturing spoken dialogue only for the purpose of constructing a full, coded summary of each encounter. By converting free‑form conversation into a standardized format, the system aligns with existing electronic health record structures, allowing seamless integration without disrupting established workflows. The review stage gives clinicians full control, enabling them to correct any misinterpretations before the final record is stored, which maintains clinical governance standards.

Leaders from both trusts have highlighted that the ambient voice solution is not merely a convenience but a core component of a broader ambition to embed digital innovation throughout patient pathways. By automating routine documentation, the trusts anticipate that clinicians will have greater capacity to engage in subtle clinical reasoning, patient education, and shared decision‑making, thereby enriching the overall care experience.

Eight-month pilot shows measurable efficiency gains

The decision to expand the technology follows an eight-month pilot at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. Clinicians tested the system across multiple departments, including Emergency Medicine, Medical Same Day Emergency Care, Dermatology, ENT, Audiology, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Simon Evans, Group Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Strategy Officer, described the partnership as a way to bring benefits to patients’ experiences. “The implementation of Ambient Voice Technology will support our clinicians to deliver patient care by reducing the administrative burden,” Evans said. “Our partnership with Heidi Health highlights tangible examples of how the technology can improve the experience of care for clinicians and patients alike.”

Results from the trial demonstrated a significant impact on efficiency. Clinicians reduced their documentation time to an average of less than four minutes per patient. This shift allows healthcare professionals to spend more time focusing on direct patient care rather than completing paperwork.

In the broader context of NHS digitalization, this rollout addresses a persistent bottleneck. Historically, administrative tasks have siphoned hours away from clinical work, often leading to staff burnout. By automating the note‑taking process, these trusts are attempting to reallocate that time to direct interaction, though the long-term effects on clinical outcomes remain to be seen.

The pilot’s breadth across such a diverse set of specialties illustrates the flexibility of ambient voice technology. Emergency departments, with their fast‑paced, high‑volume environment, benefit from rapid note generation that keeps pace with patient turnover. In contrast, specialties like Dermatology and Audiology, which involve detailed descriptive assessments, gain from the system’s ability to capture subtle observations without interrupting the clinician’s focus.

Following the successful trial, Heidi Health was selected as the preferred supplier of Ambient Voice Technology for both NHS trusts. The technology will initially be deployed within Emergency Departments and outpatient services across both organisations before being expanded across all clinical areas by 2028. This staged approach allows teams to refine integration processes, gather user feedback, and ensure that the solution scales effectively while maintaining data integrity and patient confidentiality.

As NHS organisations continue to explore digital solutions that support frontline teams, the adoption of AVT offers a practical example of artificial intelligence being used to improve clinical workflows, reduce administrative pressures and enhance the quality of patient interactions. By embedding the technology early in high‑impact settings, the trusts aim to create a demonstrable model that can be replicated in other regions, reinforcing the strategic priority of leveraging AI to sustain a resilient and patient‑centred health service.
