Harrogate District Hospital will see its main entrance rebuilt after the trust board approved plans for a major redevelopment aimed at improving the arrival experience for patients, visitors and staff. The project, approved earlier this year, represents one of the most significant upgrades to the hospital’s public-facing areas in recent memory.
The trust is working with property developer noviniti and One Retail, the retail division of Compass Group UK & Ireland, to deliver the scheme. Planning permission was granted in February 2026. Construction is scheduled to begin in early September 2026, with completion targeted for spring 2027.
What the redesign will include
The plans call for a more open and inviting arrival space with better self-check-in and reception facilities. Informal seating areas will be added throughout, and the hospital will gain a significant boost in toilet provision, including a dedicated Changing Places toilet designed for people with complex care needs.

Two retail outlets will anchor the new space: a Costa Coffee and an M&S Food store. The trust says these additions are meant to serve the thousands of people who spend extended time at the hospital each week. Café Bistro will close at the end of September, and WHSmith shut its doors in July to make way for the work. Food service will continue from Herriots Restaurant on the first floor during construction.
The current entrance will stay open throughout the build. The trust has promised clear signage and coordinated efforts to help people handle around the site while work is underway.
Funding and sustainability
The scheme is being funded primarily through commercial investment, which means the trust says there will be no impact on frontline care budgets, patient services or staffing. This approach lets the hospital upgrade its facilities without drawing resources away from clinical care.
Sustainability features are built into the design. Environmental considerations were part of the planning process, and the trust says the redevelopment will help reduce its carbon footprint. The work fits into a broader push to modernize hospital facilities so they reflect the quality of care delivered inside them.

Jonathan Coulter, chief executive at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, said the project was designed with the emotional realities of hospital visits in mind. “Coming into a hospital as a patient, carer or visitor can be an anxious and emotional experience,” he said. “We want everyone who walks through our doors to feel supported and reassured from the moment they arrive.”
He added that the space will meet the needs of a modern healthcare setting while offering better retail options for everyone who uses the site. “We are committed to ensuring patients remain at the heart of everything we do, and providing long-term value for the Trust and its community.”
The trust expects the redevelopment to deliver lasting benefits for patients, staff and the wider Harrogate community. With the commercial partners handling much of the financial lift, the hospital can focus on what it does best while the new entrance takes shape over the next two years.
